How to count the words in sublime text?

You need to install a plugin:
sublime.wbond.net/packages/WordCount

It’s recommended to install plugins with Package Control, which is Sublime’s de facto plugin manager. The site I linked to also provides installation instructions for Package Control as well as an interface to look up more plugins. (Although after you’ve installed Package Control you can browse packges from within Sublime.)

Would like to be able to include digits in the count.

You can use find and regular expression to match the words and digits, the number of matches would be displayed on the status line.
ctrl+f and \w+
