Is there any further documentation on how this patterns thing is supposed to work?

I am writing a syntax highlighting for some syntax, but I am a bit stumped with regard to how patterns and captures all work together. The linked-to TextMate documentation does not seem utterly relevant, so any clearer pointers or explanations are welcome.
