Markdown doesn't actually color anything?

When I choose Markdown highlighting in a partially-Markdown-formatted file, it doesn't actually change the color of anything. It tweaks the indentation, but all text remains white.

Is this normal?

You need to use a color scheme that selects different colors for markdown scopes - Monokai doesn't do this. Try the SpaceCadet color scheme, for example.
