Multiple views of the same buffer

Multiple views of the same buffer

Postby Seldaek on Wed Jun 09, 2010 10:46 am

Heya, I'm wondering if it would be possible to display twice the same buffer, in two side-by-side views. If you edit something in one it's automatically shown in the other, etc.. So really the same buffer would be displayed twice. Some kind of "duplicate view" function would be neat. The reason is that sometimes I am refactoring big messy files and having the ability to view one part on the left and the new version of it on the right would be very handy. Scrolling all the time between the two location can be a bit annoying.

I believe you want to use File > New view into buffer. I can't check the actual location of this option now, but it's there.

Nice. I was going to post a request for this too, but luckily found it here.

I would like to suggest that perhaps something more obvious would help. Although I don't want enormous menus, perhaps a "copy view to pane" menu?

At a minimum, it might be worth adding as a FAQ :-)
