The scope, indentation and block-based selection tools are incredible. But sometimes I want to remove the outer lines from the selection. Is there an inverse to “add previous/next line”?
Keystroke for contracting selection?

Not as such, but if the reason you want to contract is because you’ve just expanded the selection too much (as commonly happens with ctrl+d / cmd+d), then you can use soft undo (ctrl+u / cmd+u) to go back to the previous selection state.

I have never needed to add lines in both directions from the starting point, it would make more sense if add/remove lines behaves like shift+arrows selection — if you start adding down, then moving down adds and moving up removes lines; if you start adding up, moving up adds and moving down removes lines.
