A probably silly question: I understand that this is not possible right now, but would it be at all feasible to add the ability to run without DirectX/OpenGL? I know we would lose the minimap (probably), but this may be useful on slower machines / under a virtual machine. Also, it would probably save battery life on laptops, no? The latter is potentially an issue, I would think.
