How do I turn on Vintage Command mode?

On OSX. I am pretty sure Vintage mode is enabled (I see INSERT MODE in the status bar), but I can't enter COMMAND mode. How di I do that? the escape key doesn't work, as I've seen in some tutorials. Thanks!
